Vigorous deciduous shrub producing masses of bright golden-yellow flowers on bare stems in early to mid-spring (typically March–April). Classic, reliable cottage-garden plant; excellent as a specimen, informal hedge/screen or border shrub. Fully hardy, low-maintenance, and tolerant of a wide range of conditions.

Planting advice

• When: Plant in the dormant season, November–March, during mild weather when the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. Plant as soon as possible after delivery.
• Position: Full sun for best flowering (tolerates partial shade but flowers less). Suitable for exposed or sheltered sites, including coastal gardens.
• Soil: Any moist but well-drained soil (chalk, clay, loam or sand; acid, alkaline or neutral). Avoid permanently waterlogged ground.
• Size: Ultimate height 2.5–4 m, spread 1.5–2.5 m (can be kept smaller by pruning).
• Spacing: 60–90 cm apart for a hedge; allow more space (around 2 m) for individual specimens.
• How to plant:
  – Dig a hole wide enough for the roots to spread out and deep enough so the previous soil mark on the stem sits level with the surrounding ground.
  – Backfill with excavated soil (improve heavy or poor soils with organic matter if needed), firm gently and water well.
  – Mulch around the base (keep clear of stems).
• Aftercare: Water regularly during dry spells for the first 1–2 years until established. Prune immediately after flowering to encourage strong growth and better blooms the following year.
