Dwarf Purple Willow (salix purpurea 'Nana')

Compact, hardy deciduous shrub (typically 0.5–1.5 m high and wide) with slender blue-green leaves, reddish-purple stems for strong winter interest, and silvery-yellow catkins in early spring.
Ideal for small gardens, borders, informal hedging, coastal sites, wildlife gardens, and moist areas. Low-maintenance, fully hardy across the UK, supports early pollinators, and tolerates a range of soils including wetter conditions.
Planting summary
- When: Best late autumn to early spring.
- Where: Full sun (or light partial shade) for best stem colour and growth; any deep, moist but well-drained soil (clay, loam or sand; acid to alkaline). Avoid shallow chalk. Suitable for borders, watersides, coastal or exposed sites.
- How: Plant at the same depth as in the nursery; dig in organic matter if soil is poor or dry. Space 80–150 cm apart depending on use. Water regularly until established (especially first 1–2 summers).
- Aftercare: Easy; prune lightly in late winter if needed to maintain size or encourage colourful young stems. Tolerates coastal salt and wet soils.
