• Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout the UK, tolerant to -20°C or lower; well-suited to British climates, including exposed sites.
• Site: Full sun to partial shade for best flowering and fruiting; tolerates exposed or sheltered positions; grows as a large shrub or small tree (5–8m tall, 4–6m spread), ideal for mixed borders, hedges, or specimen planting.
• Soil: Prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil; highly tolerant of chalk, clay, loam, sand, and acid to alkaline pH; avoid waterlogged conditions.
• Planting time: Container-grown any time (ideally autumn or spring); bare-root November to March (dormant season).
• Planting method: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball; incorporate organic matter (compost or manure) to improve soil; plant at the same depth as was growing in the nursery (soil mark on stem); mulch base and water thoroughly.
• Watering: Water regularly during the first 1–2 years, especially in dry periods; once established, drought-tolerant with low water needs.
• Maintenance: Low; minimal pruning required (remove dead/damaged or crossing branches in late winter/early spring); apply mulch annually; no regular feeding needed.
