Hardy, low-maintenance deciduous shrub valued for its intense orange-blossom fragrance and creamy-white flowers in early summer. Ideal for cottage gardens, borders, informal hedges/screens, or near seating areas; attracts pollinators and tolerates a wide range of conditions.
Key planting points
- Size: Typically 1.5–2.5 m high and wide (can reach ~3 m if unpruned); allow space accordingly or plant 60–150 cm apart for hedging.
- When to plant: Bare-root in the dormant season (winter), avoid planting in frozen or waterlogged ground.
- Position: Full sun or partial shade (best flowering and scent in sun); suits exposed or sheltered sites, including coastal and urban areas.
- Soil: Any well-drained, moderately fertile soil (chalk, clay, loam or sand; acid to alkaline). Avoid prolonged waterlogging. Improve planting hole with well-rotted compost or manure.
- How to plant: Dig a hole twice the width of the root and the same depth. Plant at the same level as in the nursery. Backfill, firm gently, water thoroughly, and mulch.
- Aftercare: Water regularly in the first 1–2 years and during dry spells until established. Once mature it is fairly drought-tolerant. Mulch in spring. Prune after flowering (remove spent flowered shoots and about one-fifth of older stems to the base) to encourage next year’s blooms.
