Striking silvery-blue evergreen foliage provides year-round colour and structure. Hardy, low-maintenance once established, drought-tolerant, suitable for exposed/windy sites, excellent specimen tree, windbreak or a very spikey Christmas tree; strong branches and good needle retention.Key growing conditions

• Best grown in full sun for strongest colour and growth
• Moist but free-draining, fertile soil; neutral to acidic pH preferred (tolerates slightly alkaline)
• Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged ground – improve drainage with grit/compost if needed
• Fully hardy across the UK

When to plant

• Best time for bare root plants is during the dormant season (Nov–March)
• Container-grown: any time if soil is workable (not frozen or waterlogged)

How to plant

• Dig hole twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth
• Place tree so the top of the root ball is level with surrounding soil (do not plant too deep)
• Backfill with excavated soil (mix in compost if poor), firm gently, water thoroughly
• Mulch around base (keep clear of trunk) to retain moisture and suppress weeds
• Space mature trees well apart (allow for eventual height of 10–15 m+ and spread of several metres.

Aftercare

• Water regularly for the first 1–2 years until established
• Feed with balanced fertiliser in spring if desired
• No regular pruning needed; remove only dead/damaged growth
• Protect young plants from severe drying winds if necessary

Once established it requires minimal care and thrives in typical UK conditions with good drainage and sunlight.
