Dense, upright evergreen with large glossy dark-green leaves. Excellent for formal or informal hedges, privacy screens and windbreaks. Fast-growing (typically 30–60 cm per year), very hardy, shade- and drought-tolerant once established, low-maintenance, and wildlife-friendly (spring white flowers for pollinators; berries for birds). More upright/narrower habit than many other cherry laurels, making it useful where space is limited.
Key planting points
- Best time: Late autumn or early spring while dormant.
- Position: Full sun to full shade; tolerates exposed or sheltered sites (including coastal).
- Soil: Moist but well-drained, moderately fertile; accepts clay, loam or sand (acid to neutral). Avoid prolonged waterlogging and very shallow chalk (may cause chlorosis). Improve heavy or poor soils with compost.
- Spacing (hedge): 60–100 cm apart (roughly 3–4 plants per metre for a single row; denser for quicker screening). Plant at least 1–1.5 m from fences/buildings if possible.
- How to plant: Dig a hole as deep as the root and twice as wide. Place so the top of the root is level with surrounding soil. Backfill, firm gently, water thoroughly and mulch.
- Aftercare: Water regularly for the first 1–2 years (especially in dry spells). Once established it is drought-tolerant and needs little attention beyond occasional pruning (after flowering or in summer) to maintain shape and density.
