Bridal Wreath Spiraea (spiraea arguta)

A hardy, deciduous shrub prized for its cascading sprays of pure white flowers in April–May that cover the arching stems, creating a fountain-like “bridal wreath” effect.

It is low-maintenance, fully hardy across the UK, easy to grow in most conditions, pollinator-friendly, and suits cottage/informal borders, banks, or as a specimen. 

Planting summary

• Best time: November–March while dormant (avoid frozen or waterlogged ground); 
• Position: Full sun to partial shade (best flowering in sun); any aspect, including exposed sites.
• Soil: Most types (chalk, loam, sand, clay) provided they are moist but well-drained; tolerates acid, neutral or alkaline pH. Improve heavy clay with organic matter.
• How to plant: Dig a hole twice the width of the rootball (same depth). Plant at the same level as in the nursery. Backfill with native soil mixed with compost if needed, firm gently, water thoroughly, and mulch. Space 1.5–2.5 m apart. 
• Aftercare basics: Water regularly in the first growing season (especially dry spells); once established it is relatively drought-tolerant. Prune immediately after flowering if needed. Mature size typically 1.5–2.5 m height and spread.
