• Semi-evergreen (retains more leaves in winter than common wild privet, especially in milder conditions).
• Dense, dark green foliage ideal for formal or informal hedges, screening, and windbreaks.
• Hardy, vigorous, and tolerant of most soils (including chalk, clay, sand), pollution, coastal/exposed sites, sun or partial shade.
• Fast-growing (typically 20–40 cm per year); wildlife-friendly (flowers for insects, berries for birds).
• Easy to prune and shape.

Planting advice

• Timing: November to March (dormant season), while ground is workable and not frozen or waterlogged.
• Preparation: Dig a trench ~30–40 cm deep and 40–50 cm wide. Improve soil with well-rotted organic matter/compost if needed. Keep roots moist and covered until planting; soak in water for 1–2 hours beforehand.
• Spacing: Typically 3–5 plants per metre for a single row (≈20–33 cm apart); closer (up to 5–6/m) for denser/faster screening or smaller plants. Double staggered row for thicker hedges.
• Planting: Plant at the same depth as the soil mark on the stem. Spread roots naturally, backfill, firm well, and water thoroughly. Mulch to suppress weeds and retain moisture.
• Aftercare: Water in dry spells for the first 1–2 years. Keep weed-free. Prune to encourage bushiness once established. Tolerates hard pruning.

Avoid waterlogged sites. Plants may drop some leaves after transplanting but recover in spring.
