Compact, dense, upright deciduous shrub (typically 1–2 m high and wide) with early bright-green lobed foliage that turns yellow in autumn. Excellent for formal or informal hedges, borders, or underplanting. Tolerates heavy pruning/shearing, full sun to deep shade, exposed or sheltered sites, urban pollution, and a wide range of soils.

Fully hardy across the UK, low-maintenance once established, and deer/rabbit resistant. 

Planting tips

• Best time: Late autumn to early spring when the ground isn’t frozen or waterlogged.
• Position: Full sun, partial shade, or deep shade; works in exposed or sheltered spots.
• Soil: Any moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil (chalk, loam, sand, clay); tolerates acid to alkaline pH and poorer soils. Avoid prolonged waterlogging.
• Spacing: 30–50 cm apart for a dense low hedge; 0.8–1.5 m for groups or informal planting.
• Method: Dig a hole twice the width of the root; plant at the same depth as in the nursery (or slightly deeper to encourage rooting); backfill with soil mixed with compost/organic matter; firm and water well. Mulch to retain moisture.
• Aftercare: Water regularly in the first growing season. Once established it is drought-tolerant and needs little feeding. Trim as needed (responds well to hard pruning) to maintain shape and density.
