Growing Lawson's Cypress (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana)
  • Evergreen conifer with attractive, feathery or scale-like foliage, providing year-round interest and privacy.
  • Fast-growing when young, forming dense hedges or screens quickly; excellent for windbreaks and noise reduction.
  • Tolerant of a wide range of soils (including chalky), shade, and exposed/windy sites; low-maintenance once established.
  • Provides shelter for nesting birds and wildlife.
Planting Guide
  • Best time to plant: Bareroot plants available November–March.
  • Site and soil: Full sun to partial shade; moist but well-drained soil, preferably slightly acidic to neutral (tolerates chalk but avoids waterlogged or very dry sites).
  • Spacing for hedging: 2- 3 plants per metre to form a dense screen.
  • Planting tips: Dig holes twice the root width; water regularly in the first 1–2 years, especially during dry periods; mulch to retain moisture.
  • Care: Trim hedges twice a year (spring and late summer) to maintain shape; avoid cutting into old brown wood as it won't regrow.
  • Legal considerations: No specific restrictions on planting, but if used as a high hedge (>2m) affecting neighbours, it falls under the Anti-Social Behaviour Act (Part 8) for high hedges complaints—regular maintenance recommended to avoid disputes.
