Growing Noble Fir (Abies procera)
  • Premium Christmas tree: Excellent needle retention (even in heated homes), sturdy branches for heavy ornaments, attractive blue-green foliage, symmetrical shape, and pleasant citrus-like scent.
  • High-quality timber: Strong, lightweight, close-grained wood valued for construction, interior joinery, and specialist uses.
  • Ornamental value: Majestic pyramidal form, suitable as a specimen tree in parks or large gardens; tolerant of exposure and poor soils in uplands.
  • Forestry benefits: Hardy in cool, moist UK climates; useful for diversification in wetter western regions.
Planting Guide
  • Site selection: Best in cooler, wetter western/uphill areas with >1000mm annual rainfall; full sun to partial shade; sheltered from extreme winds if possible.
  • Soil requirements: Moist but well-drained, slightly acidic (avoids chalky or calcareous soils); tolerates poor to rich mineral soils but not dry, peaty, or waterlogged sites.
  • Planting time: Dormant season (November–April).
  • Spacing and care: Slow to establish (5–12 years to significant height); water regularly during dry spells in first years; no fertilizer needed once established.
  • Growth expectations: Can reach 45m+ in ideal conditions; limited planting scale in UK due to specific climate needs.
