Growing Red Oak Trees (Quercus rubra)
  • North American deciduous tree, widely planted since 1724; fast-growing (faster than native oaks) reaching 25–35m tall with broad, rounded crown.
  • Spectacular autumn colour: deeply lobed leaves turn brilliant scarlet-red in The Fall, often persisting late into the season.
  • Highly tolerant of urban pollution, poor/dry soils, and some exposure; more adaptable than English oak on acidic or compacted sites.
  • Produces acorns for wildlife (jays, squirrels, deer); supports insects and birds; excellent specimen for parks, avenues, or large gardens.
  • Attractive fissured bark with age; wind-resistant once established; RHS Award of Garden Merit winner.
  • Note: Can suffer chlorosis on very chalky soils; acorns less palatable to UK wildlife than native species.
Planting Guide
  • Best time: Bare-root November–March (dormant season); container-grown autumn or spring.
  • Location: Full sun to partial shade; deep, moist but well-drained, preferably acidic to neutral soil (tolerates clay/loam but dislikes shallow chalk); requires vast space – unsuitable for small gardens (mature spread 15–25m+).
  • Preparation: Dig large hole twice root width; incorporate organic matter in poor soils.
  • Planting: Set at original depth (check trunk soil mark); stake young trees; firm in, water well, mulch base (keep clear of trunk) to reduce weed growth and conserve soil moisture.
  • Aftercare: Water regularly first few years in dry spells; minimal pruning (remove dead/damaged in winter); protect young trees from rabbitsand deer.
