Growing a Hazel Tree (Corylus avellana)
Native, hardy and low-maintenance; thrives in most UK soils and climates.
  • Produces edible hazelnuts (cobnuts) for harvesting fresh, roasting or baking.
  • Early spring catkins provide essential nectar for pollinators; nuts feed birds, squirrels and dormice.
  • Highly versatile: suitable as a shrub, small tree, productive hedge or coppiced for rods (crafts, bean poles).
  • Attractive golden autumn foliage and year-round ornamental interest.
  • Supports biodiversity and requires little space compared to larger trees.

Planting Guide
  • Best time: Bare-root November–March (dormant season); container-grown anytime, preferably autumn.
  • Location: Full sun to partial shade; moist, well-drained soil (tolerates clay, loam, chalk).
  • Preparation: Dig hole twice root width; add compost if soil is poor.
  • Planting: Set at original depth (check soil mark on stem); firm in, water deeply, mulch base (keep clear of trunk).
  • Aftercare: Water regularly first year in dry spells; minimal pruning needed.
