Growing Green Leylandii (× Cuprocyparis leylandii)
  • Extremely fast-growing evergreen conifer (up to 90cm per year), providing rapid dense screening and privacy hedging.
  • Forms a thick, year-round barrier – excellent windbreak, noise reduction, and security.
  • Highly tolerant of most soils (including clay, chalk, poor), coastal exposure, pollution, and hard pruning.
  • Low-maintenance once established; retains vibrant green foliage throughout the year.
  • Versatile for tall hedges, screens, or specimen planting; widely used despite occasional neighbour disputes over height.
Planting Guide
  • Best time: Anytime (container-grown), ideally autumn or spring to avoid frost/extreme heat.
  • Location: Full sun to partial shade; any well-drained soil (tolerates wet or dry once established); ample space – grows 15–20m+ tall if untrimmed, unsuitable for small gardens.
  • Preparation: Dig trench or hole twice root ball width; add organic matter to very poor soils; space plants 60–90cm apart for hedging.
  • Planting: Set at original depth (check soil mark on stem); firm in, water freely, mulch base (keep clear of trunk) to reduce weed growth and conserve soil moisture.
  • Aftercare: Water regularly first two years in dry spells; trim sides lightly from year 1, tops once desired height reached (twice yearly, May and August/September); never cut into old wood; keep below 2m if neighbour issues possible (High Hedges legislation applies).
