Growing Cobnut Trees
  • Large-fruited cultivar of hazel, specifically bred for bigger, tastier edible nuts (cobnuts) with thinner shells than common hazel.
  • Produces heavy crops of sweet, fresh nuts in late summer – ideal for eating green/fresh, roasting, or storing.
  • Early spring catkins support pollinators; nuts feed birds, squirrels, and dormice; excellent wildlife value.
  • Vigorous, bushy deciduous shrub or small tree (3–6m); versatile for orchards, hedges, or coppicing.
  • Attractive golden autumn foliage; hardy and low-maintenance once established.
Planting Guide
  • Best time: Bare-root November–March (dormant season); container-grown anytime, preferably autumn.
  • Location: Full sun to partial shade; fertile, moist but well-drained soil (tolerates clay or chalk); sheltered from strong winds to protect catkins and improve nut set.
  • Preparation: Dig hole twice root width; add compost or well-rotted manure to poor soils.
  • Planting: Set at original depth (check soil mark on stem); firm in, water well, mulch base (keep clear of trunk) to surpress weeds and conserve soil moisture.
  • Aftercare: Water regularly first year in dry spells; prune lightly after planting to shape; protect young nuts from squirrels.
