Growing Swamp Cypress (Taxodium distichum)
  • Deciduous conifer with soft, feathery light-green foliage turning brilliant rusty-orange to russet-brown in autumn, providing stunning seasonal colour.
  • Highly adaptable and tolerant of wet, waterlogged or flooded soils, ideal for problem boggy areas or waterside planting.
  • Conical to columnar habit, forming a majestic specimen tree with attractive fibrous red-brown bark.
  • Fully hardy in the UK, withstanding cold winters; RHS Award of Garden Merit recipient.
  • Low-maintenance, pest-resistant, and long-lived; tolerates normal garden soils once established.
Planting Guide in the UK
  • Site: Full sun to partial shade; best in moist, wet or boggy locations (e.g., near ponds, streams or poorly drained areas).
  • Soil: Prefers acidic, moisture-retentive soils; adapts to clay, loam or sand but avoids alkaline conditions to prevent chlorosis.
  • Timing: Plant in spring or autumn for optimal establishment.
  • Method: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball; plant at the same depth, water thoroughly, and mulch to retain moisture.
  • Spacing and size: Allow ample space as it reaches 15-30m tall in the UK; suitable for large gardens or parks.
  • Care: Keep well-watered in the first year; minimal pruning needed; may develop "knees" (root projections) in very wet sites.
