Growing Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides)
  • A fast-growing deciduous conifer with soft, feathery foliage that emerges light green in spring, turns deep green in summer, and bronze/russet in autumn for stunning seasonal interest.
  • Prehistoric "living fossil" rediscovered in the 1940s, adding historical and ornamental appeal as a majestic pyramidal specimen tree.
  • Fully hardy in UK climates, tolerant of wet soils, pollution, and urban conditions; suitable for large gardens, parks, or waterside planting.
Planting and Care
  • Site: Full sun (tolerates partial shade); spacious location as it reaches 20-30m+ height and 8-10m spread.
  • Soil: Humus-rich, moist but well-drained; prefers slightly acidic to neutral (pH 5.5-7.5); tolerates clay, chalk, or periodically waterlogged soils but avoids prolonged drought or poor drainage.
  • Timing: Best in autumn or early spring when dormant.
  • Planting: Dig a wide hole, plant at original depth, water thoroughly to settle roots; mulch to retain moisture.
  • Watering: Keep consistently moist, especially for young trees (first 2-3 years) and during dry spells; established trees are more drought-tolerant.
  • Maintenance: Minimal pruning needed; few pest/disease issues.
