Vigorous, long-lived deciduous climber prized for its exceptionally long, fragrant racemes of pea-like flowers (often 30–60 cm. Flowers appear with the emerging leaves in late spring/early summer. Twines clockwise; excellent for pergolas, arches or walls where the cascading blooms can hang freely. Hardy and reliable across most of the UK when given good conditions.

Planting tips

• When: Best October–April (dormant season). 
• Where: Full sun (south- or west-facing ideal; at least 6 hours daily) in a sheltered spot. Moist but well-drained, fertile soil of any type (chalk, clay, loam or sand; acid to alkaline). Avoid waterlogged ground.
• Support: Provide a strong structure (horizontal wires on a wall, sturdy pergola or arch) – mature plants become very heavy.
• How: Dig a hole twice the width of the rootball and the same depth, 30–60 cm away from a wall base. Backfill with soil mixed with well-rotted compost, firm in, water thoroughly and mulch (keep mulch clear of the stem). 
• Aftercare note: Water regularly while establishing; once mature it is relatively drought-tolerant. Prune twice yearly (summer and winter) for best flowering and control.
