Wild Red Currant (ribes rubrum)
£3.24
Hardy, low-maintenance deciduous shrub producing abundant clusters of bright, tart red berries in mid-summer. Self-fertile, long-lived (15–20+ years), suitable for small gardens or containers. Excellent for jelly, jams, summer puddings, sauces, and freezing; high in vitamin C and antioxidants. Tolerates partial shade better than many soft fruits and can be trained as bushes, cordons, or fans.
Planting advice
- When: Best November–March for bare-root or potted plants anytime the soil is not frozen or waterlogged.
- Position: Full sun preferred for best flavour and yield; tolerates partial shade (e.g. north-facing wall). Sheltered from strong winds and late frosts.
- Soil: Moist but well-drained; fertile, neutral to slightly acid (pH ~6–7). Avoid waterlogging. Improve poor soil with compost or well-rotted manure.
- Spacing: Bushes 1.2–1.5 m apart; cordons 30–40 cm; fans ~1.5 m.
- How to plant: Dig a hole large enough for roots to spread. Plant at the same depth as previously grown (or slightly deeper). Firm soil, water thoroughly, and mulch.
- Aftercare notes: Mulch in spring; water in dry spells (especially while establishing); Prune in late winter/early spring to maintain an open shape.
