• Attractive evergreen conifer with dense, dark green needles (bright lime-green when new), pleasant fragrance, and a neat conical form.

Planting summary

• Site: Sheltered position (does not tolerate strong exposure/winds); full sun to light partial shade. Prefer freer-draining valley sides over exposed or frost-pocket sites.
• Soil: Moist but well-drained, preferably acidic to neutral, fertile loams; tolerates a range from poor to rich and some alkaline soils. Avoid peats, very poor soils, or waterlogging. 
• Climate suitability: Cold-hardy UK-wide; best with decent rainfall (ideally >900 mm, more western sites preferred), though drought tolerance is a noted advantage over related firs. Early growth can be slow and vulnerable to late frost or deer browsing.
• Planting time & method: Autumn or spring (when soil is workable). Dig a hole twice the width of the root; plant at the same depth as in the nursery; incorporate organic matter if needed; firm gently and water well. Mulch around the base. 
• Aftercare: Keep watered in the first 1–2 years, especially in dry spells. Minimal pruning needed once established. Protect young plants from deer if present.

Suitable for larger gardens, parks, or forestry diversification where space allows (mature height can reach 20–30+ m).
