Compact, bushy deciduous shrub (typically 0.5–1 m high and wide) with fragrant, star-shaped pure white flowers in late spring to early summer. Easy to grow, hardy, low-maintenance, adaptable to most soils, and excellent for borders, informal low hedges, smaller gardens, or containers. Attracts pollinators.

Planting advice

• Timing: Late autumn to early spring (November–March), while dormant. 
• Site: Full sun or partial shade; sheltered position preferred to protect flower buds from late frosts and cold winds. Avoid deep shade or very exposed spots.
• Soil: Moist but well-drained; tolerates chalk, clay, loam, or sand and a wide pH range (acid to alkaline). Improve heavy or poor soil with garden compost or well-rotted manure.
• Preparation: Dig a hole wide enough for the roots to spread freely. Mix in organic matter. Plant promptly on arrival.
• Planting: Position so the top of the roots sits level with the surrounding soil surface (do not plant deeply). Spread roots out, backfill, firm gently, and water thoroughly (at least 10 litres).
• Spacing: 50–60 cm for a low informal hedge; 80 cm–1 m for borders.
• Aftercare: Mulch with 5 cm of bark or compost (keep clear of stems). Water regularly during the first growing season in dry spells. Once established it needs little watering. Prune lightly after flowering if desired.

Generally pest- and disease-free and straightforward once established.
