Green Berberis (berberis thunbergii)

• Dense, deciduous shrub (typically 1–2m tall, sometimes trained as small tree-like form) with fresh green foliage turning brilliant red-orange in autumn.
• Highly effective security hedging or barrier planting – thorny stems deter intruders and animals.
• Low-maintenance, hardy, and tolerant of most soils (including poor, chalky, or clay), urban pollution, and coastal exposure.
• Small yellow flowers in spring attract pollinators; red berries in autumn/winter provide food for birds.
• Versatile for borders, mixed hedges, or specimen planting.
• Note: Unlike purple-leaved forms, green varieties are less invasive but still produce viable seed.

Planting Guide

• Best time: Bare-root November–March (dormant season); container-grown anytime, ideally autumn or spring.
• Location: Full sun to partial shade (sun for best autumn colour); well-drained soil (tolerates most types except waterlogged); sheltered or exposed sites.
• Preparation: Dig hole twice root width; add organic matter to very poor soils; wear gloves – stems are very thorny.
• Planting: Set at original depth (check soil mark on stem); firm in, water thoroughly, mulch base to reduce weed competition (keep clear of stems).
• Aftercare: Water well first year in dry spells; prune after flowering if shaping hedge (late spring/summer); minimal feeding needed; generally pest- and disease-resistant.
