Common Berberis (berberis vulgaris)

• Hardy deciduous thorny shrub (typically 2.5–4 m high), excellent for informal or security hedges, borders, wildlife gardens, and coastal sites.
• Produces hanging yellow-orange flowers in late spring/early summer (good for pollinators) and bright red berries in autumn (food for birds; tart and edible for humans in jams/jellies).
• Supports wildlife, including the rare Barberry Carpet moth; low-maintenance and tolerant of a wide range of soils (chalk, clay, loam, sand) in full sun or partial shade, provided drainage is reasonable.

Planting advice

• Plant only while dormant, November–March (ideally mid-autumn while soil is still warm), avoiding frozen or waterlogged ground.
• Prepare the site in advance: clear weeds, dig a hole or trench wide enough for the roots to spread, and improve soil with organic matter if needed. Choose a well-drained spot in sun or partial shade.
• On arrival, keep roots moist. Plant at the same depth as the nursery soil mark on the stem. Spread roots naturally, backfill, firm gently to remove air pockets, and water thoroughly.
• For hedges, space plants roughly 30–60 cm apart (or ≥50 cm).
• Mulch around the base (keep clear of stems) and water during dry spells in the first 1–2 years while establishing. Once settled it needs little care.
