A vigorous, fast-growing ornamental deciduous tree valued for its large pinnate (ash-like) leaves that turn yellow in autumn, long drooping catkins of flowers followed by distinctive strings of winged nuts (often persisting into winter), attractive fissured bark, and ability to form a broad, spreading shade canopy. Suitable for large gardens, parks, or moist sites; hardy across much of the UK and tolerant of wet conditions.
Key planting points
- Size: Reaches >12 m (often 15–25 m) tall with a spread >8 m; needs ample space and is best for large gardens or open areas.
- Site: Full sun (south- or west-facing preferred); tolerates exposed or sheltered positions but dislikes shade and salt-laden winds.
- Soil: Deep, fertile, moist but well-drained; grows in clay, loam or sand across acid to alkaline pH. Prefers consistently moist conditions and tolerates temporary flooding or wet sites near water.
- Hardiness: Fully hardy in most of the UK but young growth can be damaged by late frosts.
- Planting: Best in late autumn to early spring. Water regularly in the first year or two; mulch to retain moisture. Stake if exposed.
- Care: Minimal pruning (remove dead/crossing branches in winter). Control root suckers annually if a single trunk is desired, as it suckers freely and can form thickets. Generally pest-free but may be susceptible to honey fungus. Avoid planting near paving, foundations or lawns due to surface roots and suckering.
