Distinctive narrow, columnar evergreen with rich glossy green scale-like foliage in flat sprays and attractive flaking bark. Strongly aromatic (incense-like when crushed). Excellent formal architectural specimen, avenue tree or dense screen where space is limited; long-lived, low-maintenance and fully hardy in the UK.

Key growing conditions

• Full sun to partial shade (best form and density in sun)
• Any well-drained soil – tolerates chalk, clay, loam or sand; wide pH range (acid to alkaline)
• Avoid permanently waterlogged sites (susceptible to root problems)
• Fully hardy; tolerates exposure once established but benefits from shelter when young 
• Slow to moderate growth in the UK (ultimately 20–35 m tall with a relatively narrow spread of 4–8 m)

When to plant

• Best in autumn or spring when soil is workable (not frozen or waterlogged)

How to plant

• Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and of equal depth
• Position so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil
• Backfill, firm gently and water thoroughly
• Mulch around the base (keep clear of the trunk) to retain moisture and suppress weeds
• Allow adequate space for mature height and form; plant closer for screening or avenues

Aftercare

• Water regularly until established; thereafter drought-tolerant on well-drained soils
• No regular pruning required
• Low-maintenance once settled; generally trouble-free
